Ok, so we at Speakwrite Communications are furious.  Over the last couple of months, we have really paid attention to some statistics about our public schools.  The first statistic of note is the deplorable high school graduation rate.  The national dropout rate is 25%; however, do not be fooled into thinking that that means that 75% of our high school kids are graduating, because they are not.  A little known secret is that, if a student leaves school before tenth grade, they are not counted in the dropout statistics.  How many kids do you think we have lost?  Is it the kid living on the street, drinking, doing drugs?  All because, for the most important years of his short life, he was told that he was stupid and a failure.  How many lives has our education system thrown away because the powers-that- be did not think the student was worth the effort?

The next dirty little secret is that the dropout rate in the state of Colorado is actually 33%.  That means that one out of every three kids does not graduate. It gets worse.  Out of the 67% who  do graduate, 53% of those attending a two-year institute of higher learning required remediation in reading, math, and/or writing.
